Autonomous Wind Drawing Machine
the REAL DMZ PROJECT residency
Yangji-ri, Cheorwon County, Republic of Korea 2025

This project began with an invitation to travel to Korea and participate in the REAL DMZ PROJECT residency. It was an incredible opportunity to engage with the layered and often contradictory meanings of borders through the lens of contemporary art.

This machine and these drawings are my interpretation of the project’s central themes; borders, both visible and invisible, and the quiet forces that shape them. This kinetic device was created to respond directly to the environment, using wind to draw on paper in real time. The marks it makes aren’t planned or controlled; they’re shaped by wind and time.

In the borderlands of the Korean Demilitarized Zone, where human presence is limited but history and tension linger, the machine becomes a quiet listener. It translates intangible elements into fragile lines that speak to the instability and permeability of even the most rigid boundaries.

Participating in the REAL DMZ PROJECT offered a chance to reflect on the relationship between land, memory, and movement. I deeply appreciate the space the REAL DMZ team created for that kind of exploration
